David Coulthard insists that it was his decision to sign a one-year deal with Red Bull Racing, rather than the other way around. The Scot was rumoured to have been offered a single season contract while Dietrich Mateschitz's operation evaluates younger talent for 2006 and beyond. "I wanted a one-year contract to allow time to understand how the 'new' team will function and to see how their V8 engine plans evolve," he explained, "It is important to me to have that freedom to look ahead to 2006 but, having spoken at length with Dieter and key team members, their determination and vision are already very impressive."

"A basic agreement between us had been in place for two weeks, but I wanted to have the chance to test the car and work with the team," the Scot revealed, "I enjoyed the [testing] experience, [and] formally signed the contract with Dieter Mateschitz at the amazing 'Hanger 7' in Salzburg last Friday. I have to say I was very impressed with the set-up [of the aviation collection] and, if his achievements with the F1 team are similar to those which he has realised in his company, then expect to see them really going places."

Coulthard is convinced that he can offer something to teams in F1, and said that he is not fazed by joining a midfield operation like Red Bull.
"Some people have asked me how I'll feel in a team that won't be challenging for race wins straight away, but I am both realistic and totally motivated, and, at just 33 years old, I have more than enough energy and focus," he insisted, "I have made it clear at all times that I intend to be driving in F1 for a while yet.

"In over ten seasons of racing in F1, I've been pretty much everywhere on the grid. I've had a dozen pole positions, some great wins and several real disappointments. I fully expect to go through the same rollercoaster of emotions with Red Bull Racing, but growing with them is an exciting new challenge for me in Formula One. I started racing at the age of ten and I have been through all the Formulas and Championships, I don't only know McLaren.

"The main impression I got from talking with Dieter is that he's very open and straightforward. He wants the team to be a success and genuinely believes it can be. I like his positive attitude, and the Red Bull brand is clearly all about success. Red Bull Racing seems committed to succeeding and I can help them achieve that goal."
