Lucky Strike BAR Honda have signed Indy 500 winner Gil de Ferran as their new Sporting Director, according to highly regarded AtlasF1.
We've been unable to get confirmation from BAR Honda, but we are expecting a release from them tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
De Ferran has been appointed to assist the team at race weekends, taking over the running of the races from CEO Nick Fry and Technical Director Geoffrey Willis. This frees Willis to concentrate on the technical side, while Fry will continue to work on the commercial and financial side of F1.
Strategic race decision will be handed over to de Ferran.
De Ferran won the British F3 championship in 1992, and has spent a number of years in top-line racing. He won the 2000 and 2001 CART titles, following that with a win at the 2003 Indy 500.
