In a question and answer with Michiel Mol on the official Spyker F1 website, the Team Director admitted that the team do not have a title sponsor for 2007. As ever the media simply latch onto that one fact and ignore the rest.
There had been a lot of debate that the team were on the verge of signing a lucrative deal with either DHL and/or the Dutch brewer Heineken, however Michiel drew a line under that one.
"To get a title sponsor on board is our plan for 2008," he has been quoted as saying.
"We are still talking to a number of potential big sponsors but we've covered the budget for this year."
"Big multinationals do not get in just for the fun," he continued. "We are more or less the only team left without a title sponsor, so I hope we can get into a situation where we can make maximum use of that."
OK boys and girls, so what's new? In a nutshell, nothing. We all know that this season is about building the team up and getting everything in place for 2008. Are the popular media dumb or something? There has not been a single word or comment from any media outlet, simply a regurgitation of Michiels words.
Yes, I'm disappointed that the team haven't been able to sign up a big name but I'm not so worried. Spyker are in this for the long haul. We have all been told it, and we all feel it. This isn't simply a new name on the team owner list. This is a dedicated and enthusiastic company what want to go places in Formula One, and they have a plan to do it. That plan really kicks into gear next year.
In his Q&A Michiel says a lot of things that give the teams fans something to look forward to. As one that has played witness to his words for real, I can say that he talks passionately and with purpose. Any words he says are worth listening to. Isn't a pity that the rest of the media out there don't listen harder?
