Barrichello's engine given all-clear after fire

The Mercedes engine in Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car has been given the all-clear, following a serious looking fire at the end of last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

With just a few laps left of the race, smoke was seen coming from the rear of Rubens' car, and the Brazilian was initially told to slow down to preserve the engine. However, an oil leak was quickly diagnosed and Barrichello resumed a normal pace.

As he returned to the pits at the end of the race, a fire broke out as oil ignited on the hot exhausts.

Fortunately, the fire has not damaged the engine, although a lack of oil to the gearbox may have caused unseen damage.

"The team told me that my engine is fine after the fire," said Barrichello. "The gearbox seems okay but after Saturday practice we will know more."

Rubens has currently used six of his eight allocated engines. However, all six engines remain useable, allowing the team to re-use older engines for practice sessions if required.
