Mercedes focus on 2014 car by May

By Timba7
April 26 2013

New engine for 2014 is making teams to shift focus already for next year. Seems to be that only teams that are able to fight for tiltes since start of 2013 are keeping up with development to the end of 2013. All other teams are already starting to work hard for 2014 changes. Here is Mercedes boss Toto Wolffs answers from the offcial F1 website interview about the situation:

"We're already working on 2014 and we'll gradually raise the percentage of people working on next year's car," he said.

"I would say that in May we will reach a point where more than 50 per cent will work on the 2014 car."

"Here is no doubt that at a point in the summer everybody will switch their main resources to the 2014 car, as this is a very complex and complicated machine," he said.

"Of course it all depends on where you are in the standings. Those who are fighting for the title will of course concentrate longer on this year's car."

"I want to be among the four top teams in the constructors' championship and have a driver among the top four as well," he said.

It's good and not good:

Good: could be a brawn 2009 result again

Bad: could turn out to be nothing AND the focus will be less or lost for this year (hami has for now still a shot at the title, 'cause we've only had 4 races).

I hope they nail that engine and turn ferrari and renault's cheecks red full of shame of not being able to build a better engine.

(chassis too of course) :p

Hammi has a shot. I cant really understand why they brought this up in the first place.

It should have been " we aim for 2013 WDC and do everything to make it possible"

This was kind of lame. smiling smiley

Thank you for the story and the PM. Things seem to go hay-wire every year when thoughts of the coming season start to surface. Hope we get through it as smoothly as possible and salvage the best of both seasons.

Looking forward to Spain.

2014 cannot be more worrying than today.

If the team fails to harmonise the car with the tyres for 4 consecutive seasons I cannot see how their mythical 2014 will triumph. These tyres won't handle those turbo engines at all.

+ It wouldn't surprise me that after today merc has increased the amount of workforce on the WO5 from 50% to 70%

Lauda said that after Singapore they will switch focus to 2014.
Hopefully they'll still get second place, hopefully a demotivated (loss of seat) massa will help them.

So hoping for this in 2014:

Seems that way, doesn't it? I mean, Kimi hasn't been paid in a couple of months...so things must be pretty desperate.

As far as working on next years car, I think pretty much everybody is doing that now. No point in throwing good money after bad at this stage of the game.

It was at Finnish press that Lotus owns Kimi 20 mil. So its not only minor pay day miss. Its the extra salary from points that they havent paid.

So dont know what will happen to Lotus. But what ever happens it is not good for F1. Thats for sure.

Many teams are struggling. And i bet Santander has also cut down a bit. Because i think never in a million years Spanish bank with Alonso in Ferrari would have let Kimi in. No way. So Ferrari has also took some different approach than in past seasons.

I really have no clue about the team strugture and financies. But i hope Merc is still 100% committed to F1. If not then who knows what 2014 brings.

Hammi has been great! I like his aggressive style. He kind of kicks thrue the difficulties. smiling smiley

Alonso uses too much politics. I am really not sure how quick he really is. There always seems to be some out of the track systems in dark cloud when he is around.

Think about Piquet jr. His dad was WDC and who knows how quick Jr might have been, and they made him drive to wall. Who gets such powers to get team work such strategy.

Well i am kind of bored to whole Alonso. He reminds me of worlds political and elitist systems. In mini version. Such people rules the world. A bit scary isn´t it.

Well i might be a bit too strickt, world is not perfect. Nowadays not even close.

Alonso is a calculator, Hamilton a pure blood racer. Both are very good drivers but I know what defines for me the closest to the real deal (What F1 should really stand for). Look at 07-08, Lewis dominated the field as the formula was still pretty pure. Since '09 (rule change) and '11 it's saving tyres and calculating with strategy and stuff like that. In other words: f1 has gotten lame. It's a shame. F1 nowadays deprived Hamilton from his ultimate dream. I hope 2014 will put that all back into place but I'm afraid it'll stay a boring procession.

so currently known about the WO5:

-merc is optimistic about their package, although they don't know what the competition will bring

-they switched 50% focus to the 2014 car by May and 90-100% since Singapore

-They were working with an american company to reduce the radiotor size (cooling) by 30%

- Hamilton said in a recent interview that the new car will look more like the old cars (I assume he means pre 2009) and that the nose will be "deeper".

Very interesting article:

Q: What about the immediate future and 2014?
RB: Next year we’ve got a great car(Sm46). We are excited over the car that we are doing - it is such an exciting opportunity. You will see a big disparity between teams next year for the first time in a long time. There will be some teams who get it right - and some teams who get it terribly wrong. With the regulations, the powertrain and the technical challenges next year I am very pleased that we started the project in good time, doing a lot of the ground work and having put an infrastructure in place with Aldo (Costa), Geoff (Willis) and Bob (Bell) which enabled us to put some serious resource to the 2014 project. Geoff started the project back in 2012. We are as well prepared as anybody and I have good reason to be optimistic for next year.

Q: You said earlier that some teams will get it right in 2014 and others will get it terribly wrong. You said that with an undertone suggesting that you know that Mercedes will get it ‘terribly right’…
RB: You never do know, to be honest. All I know is that the more resource you can put in - and the earlier you can put it in - the better to make sure you’ve considered all of the directions that you might want to go, because there are several directions that you can go with these cars. The engine needs to be developed parallel to the chassis and we’ve been able to do that with a one-team approach. Because of that we’ve been able to start with the concept from the very beginning. So both concepts - the engine and the chassis - have been united for two or three years now. That gives us the best chance. I cannot guarantee that we absolutely have the best solution, but we’ve been able to reject directions which probably would have brought us problems.

Q: What’s your guess regarding when the ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ will begin to show themselves in 2014?
RB: We will get snapshots in testing - and I think the first three tests will be fairly dramatic for everybody as these powertrains are so new. Sure, you do get a picture and see little flashes of the performance of cars - even in a period when reliability is perhaps not established. I have a feeling that the disparity between the front and the back will be huge next year, particularly when you’re going into a race. The race will be the combination of car performance, engine performance, the tactics and the technology - so there are many more variables in 2014 than we’ve had. Lately the engine has dropped out of the equation, but next year it will again be very much part of the equation, which I think is great for Formula One. Everybody having the same engine - or virtually the same engine - and everything being just down to the chassis is losing something. Bringing the engine back (into the equation) is good news - it has been that way in most of my years in Formula One. Only the last four or five years has the engine been neutralized. So it’s great that it will be a factor again.

Good to hear!

Engine plays the most important role in 2014. Interesting to see who can nail it. Japanese Engines would have been pretty strong i believe? Honda and Toyota.

Ferrari? Long history.
Renault?
Mercedes? Since 2012 development. Looking good.

not so good to read:

Q: (Paolo Ianieri - La Gazzetta dello Sport) Lewis, we heard yesterday some declaration from Dieter Mateschitz saying that Red Bull has been working hard on the development for this season but also trying many new parts that they will use in 2014; about 50 percent of that will be on next year’s car. How is the situation at Mercedes? Have you been trying the same path or also working on trying to fight with Ferrari for second place in the Constructors’ series?
LH: Probably not being doing as much as it sounds as they have been doing, in terms of developing for next year, but I think that a lot of the stuff that you do develop on this year’s car, upgrades that we do bring to this year’s hopefully will have an effect on next year’s car. It’s kinda of similar but some teams obviously can turn their focus a little bit earlier and some a little bit later, but hopefully, ultimately, we’ll still be competitive next year with these guys.

I've got some good and bad news.

Let's start with the bad:

[grandprix247.com]

(better now than in testing and races)

And here's the good:

Translation:

-Mercedes engine lasts 5,820km
-one engine has to last 4,000km -> enough
-in oktober no team had a engine that lasted more than 3,000km
-Mercedes uses the "phase 3 engine" on the engine test rig
-that is the last spec/phase and we will see this engine at least at the tests
-also Renault already tests the engine they will use at the first test at the 28th January

More bad news:

Mercedes working hard

One would be forgiven to think that Formula 1 teams and suppliers relax and unwind a bit over the festive period. Perhaps not…

Sources close to TJ13 has suggested that Mercedes may not be as far advanced with their engine as what they have led the public believe. Yes it is running on the dyno and shifts seamlessly through the gears however it appears engineers in the Brixworth factory are burning the midnight oil (apart from the turbo they set alight a couple of weeks ago) in order to complete engine mapping among other things.

Mercedes engineers were VERY surprised to see Ferrari run their engine in the back of a 458 as they themselves are not in a position to do that in the near future.

With Jerez testing due to start in just over a month all may not be well for the Mercedes engined teams after all.

So while teams may build a great chassis it is unlikely that the car will be the deciding factor next year, rather the team who’s engine supplier has built a bullet proof engine will be a force to be reckoned with.

There's a long interview with Aldo Costa in this weeks Autosprint. I'll translate a few snippets.

- Car is in production just front/rear wing and 'wheel area' remain to be finalized.

- As a general point for '14 top speeds will be higher.

- Rear wheels will be under greater stress but Pirelli is taking this into account. "we'll see".

- We consider ours to be the best driver pairing in F1.

- The new 'dashboards' will give drivers a lot more information.

- Drivers will have to take care of fuel consumption during the race.

News about the WO5

Mercedes is testing F1 engine with half the car
Mercedes is testing its powertrain on a special test bench. The new V6 turbo is installed, including hybrid technology, transmission and cooling in an original chassis, which is cut off from the front axle to the front. The radiators are installed in the sidepods similar to the way they will be in the 2014 Silver Arrow. And the rear is also as narrow as it will be in reality.
Engineers can thus recognize the real object if the cooling works. According Lauda one of many new problems that lie ahead for all engineers. "We are constantly learning new things. Suddenly you have to take care of things like water pressure or intercooling. Oil and water must be in a precise temperature window. If these go beyond just a few degrees above a certain limit, it tears up everything."

Seems like a very delicate process :s

More rumours:

"someone working in AMG on the F1 engine, he mentioned more than 700bhp already (before electric engines)."

and

"Mercedes are using some new technology called "nyctinastic valves" in their engine.
Because of the elastic nature of these nyctinastic valves, they would break apart with the high rpm limit of previous years' regulations, but the present formula's lower rpm limit makes these nysctinastic valves viable. We are talking about serious flow increases with these valves... The rumored 100hp gain is an exaggeration with the fuel flow limits but it was not unfounded... the Mercedes engine definitely has an sizable advantage this year."

We'll soon find out. Imagine Hami and Rosberg battling it out for the title while Ferrari and RBR are trying to beat FI, Williams and Mclaren to get onto the podium.

Nope. No money to waste on prestigious events. They used to get much bigger sponsorship that expected much more grandeur.

Now, all that is gone. F1 USED to be the pinnacle of motor sport and at the same time have an air of grandeur about it.

Now that is all gone. It's business and that's it. Nobody gives a damn about the show anymore. It's about nothing but money.

Why do you think F1 left all of Europe in favor of communist dictators and middle eastern slave driver oil sheikhs?

New helmet for Rosberg, now it will be a lot easier to distinguish them.

The roman 6 is an epic fail, should have sticked to the regular "6".

V looks like an U. First I thought, what is that sign, is it his number. Then I thought: nope, it's a U or an S (U+1).
Then I read somewhere that it was a roman 6. Not clear enough because the V looks like a U.

Just my 2 cents...

Rosberg shakes down new Mercedes W05 at Silverstone

Nico Rosberg gave the new Mercedes W05 its first shakedown laps at Silverstone today, prior to the car’s official launch at Jerez on Tuesday morning.

Rosberg’s run was one of the first by a 2014 spec car, as Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat also gave the new Toro Rosso STR9 its first miles at Misano.

Teams are still allowed two private 100kms runs, despite the much stricter testing rules this year. They are known as ‘Promotional Events,’ and the cars have to run on special tyres provided by Pirelli. The FIA also has to be kept fully informed.

Apparently merc didn't use the new fw as they only had two of them and didn't want a RBR silverstone 2010 replica.

+ it also works best with the new nose (which still has to pass the crash test)

Rumours about merc engine:

Mercedes PU106 : Less power but more performance

After the Australian GP rumours begun to circulate about what could have been the secret of so much performance and reliability on the Mercedes power unit.

Reliable sources have indicated that the simplified design of the power unit may hold the advantage to the Mercedes PU106. According to these rumours, Mercedes have chosen to give up some of the power of the ERS to have more reliability and a continuous and constant flow of energy. What is it about?

Well, at Brixworth, engineers chose to renounce a part of the energy by reducing battery pack storage capacity (2MJ instead of 4MJ) , the advantages of this would be many. First of all – a much lighter battery pack- around 12/13Kg instead of the 25Kg the competition are running with. The reduced amount of energy translates also into lower cooling needs and in a more clearly defined package.

The reduced weight is a major advantage, which is also reflected in fuel consumption without even mentioning that less stress would be put on the power unit by the reduced loads. In short, simplify to get more performance.

This approach is completely different from its competitors, which could help Mercedes score many points while other teams are still suffering with the reliability of their systems.

It is this reliability that seemed totally lacking for Red Bull yet the Austrian team in collaboration with the transalpine engine manufacturer impressed many people in Australia. Putting aside the controversy about the flow meter, the French giant who has been accused of not being capable to supply a good power unit during the pre-season testing has successfully managed to sort out most of the problems proving once again that the software that has the task to manage the ERS is as important as the mechanical part.

Indeed it seems that the problems Red Bull suffered, and are still struggling with, are related to bad software management of the energy stored in the battery pack, which lead to overheating – first of the wiring and then of the two electric motors (mainly the MGU-K)

Just the two electric motors (MGU-K and MGU-H) seem to be the reasons behind Ferrari F14-T lack of speed. The Prancing Horse has displayed an apparent lack of speed since pre-season testing and this situation has repeatedly manifested itself during the inaugural GP of the season.

During the qualifying session, Ferrari (both with Kimi and Fernando) was unable to do two consecutive laps with the ERS deploying its full power; unlike its opponent. This situation results not only in slower lap times, but also with higher fuel consumption (because of less usable power from the ERS). This forced the drivers to significantly reduce their race pace. The problem seems to lie in the “communication” between the two electric motors and the battery pack, a problem that also affects the brake-by-wire.

Amongst the top teams, the F14-T was the only one that never activated – during the race – the automatic fuel saving function, which is identified by the flashing red rear light. This accounts – more than the alleged heavier weight of the 059/3 – for the high fuel consumption and the lack of performance shown by Raikkonen and Alonso.

It is evident, therefore, that the software will be the key on which teams will focus most of their efforts. The new hybrid systems have opened new scenarios and different ideas for interpretation but all with one purpose: to recover energy in a more efficient way.

Which one will be the best? We are still in the early stages to be able to answer this question. Mercedes’ solution could be the one, which could give more guarantees for the first part of the season, but what will happen when Renault and Ferrari fix their issues? Will it be enough for Mercedes powered cars to run (if rumours are confirmed) with less power but for a longer time?

The new nose war originally intended for this car but they had to race an interim nose (current one) because the new nose couldn't get past the crash test. Now it has.

It should be easier to balance the car out, according to Costa.
