The final practice sessions before qualifying and the race are done and dusted, with Lucky Strike BAR Honda's Jenson Button topping the time sheets. Getting his BAR Honda 007 round the Imola circuit in 1:20.058 secured the top slot, ahead of Alonso and Raikkonen. Seven time world champion Michael Schumacher went fourth, barely a quarter of a second behind the Englishman.

Team mate Takuma Sato set a time of 1:20.450. Despite being just 0.392 behind Button, the time was only good enough for ninth place in a session that saw less than half a second split the top 10.

Both BAR's finished the sessions ahead of arch rivals Toyota, while Felipe Massa again outpaced ex-BAR racer Jacques Villeneuve.

Despite having a new car for the race, Minardi failed to run any laps in the second session.
