Jenson Button has poured cold water on a nations hopes for a race win at Silverstone, admitting that his Honda RA106 is not as fast as his competitors. "I'm sure there'll be fans here hoping for great things," said Button at Silverstone. "I'm not sure we'll give them what we want, which is a win, but I still have faith in Honda to deliver in the longer term."

With the performance of his Honda car proving inconsistent over recent events, facing up to the might of Renault and Ferrari may be asking too much, but Button at least retains hopes of a reasonable points finish.

"I don't think we have a chance of winning because we cannot match the speed of Renault and Ferrari," he explained. "I expect we will be fighting with the likes of McLaren for the places."

Explaining why he's not where he expected to be this season, Jenson is quick to state his requirements.

"I believe the basic car is very well made but we need more downforce and extra power to get results," he said. "It is tough when you give everything and end up only fifth or sixth."

There's only one hope of a win on home turf, and that's for a traditional British summer.

"I can understand that it would be great for the fans if it is a sunny weekend," he adds, "but if it was wet it would absolutely shake it up for us. Our car would be as good in the wet as the dry. There is more chance of other people making mistakes and that would give us a chance to capitalise."
