Friday Practise In Malaysia

The first practise session saw the Force India team settle in relatively quietly. A couple of untidy moments mixed in with a brief moment in third for Giancarlo Fisichella were the only notable incidents for the team. In the end, Fisichella was 12th and Sutil 15th. Second practise was considerably more exciting from a Force point of view.

Towards the start of the session, the weather was trying to drizzle. This did not stop both Adrian and Giancarlo from setting some very quick laps on both types of tyre. Adrian had a particularly good time because he had the fastest lap on two separate occasions. Giancarlo also took P1 once. As a result of the fight the Force Indias and a couple of interlopers were having for the top spot, FIF1's sponsors got quite a lot of air time.

Unfortunately, most other teams left their quick running until later on when more rubber was on the track and the temperature had cooled. In contrast to Melbourne, the problem with tyres is orientated more towards keeping them cool than getting them warmed up. As the Force India drivers set to work on endurance running, they fell down the timesheets.

In the last half-hour of the session, errors started creeping in throughout the field. Several drivers had off-track excursions. Giancarlo had the largest excursion when he tried and failed to catch a slide at Turn 10 twenty minutes before the end of the session. The attempt to take the car round the grass part of the run-off area also failed and the front-left corner of the car got rather crumpled. This ended Giancarlo's session prematurely, leaving him 19th (but still half-a-second ahead of Nick Heidfeld for some reason).

Adrian stayed on track and got 16th. However, the end result was not indicative of his performance in the session itself.

Now the biggest question is whether Force India will fade back like last race or fulfil the promise of the early part of second practise...
