In Formula One, 'standstill' is a foreign word, as, at the pinnacle of motor racing, it's all about permanent improvement. After all, the competition is tough and close,therefore, the BMW Sauber F1 Team also is on an ongoing search for further progress. A successful effort, as Nick Heidfeld confirms At Monza the BMW Sauber F1 Team used a specially designed aero package that was adapted to the demands represented by the high-speed Italian circuit. The use of this special low-downforce spec turned out to be successful and the team secured its second podium finish of the 2006 the season, with Nick- who had crossed the Hungarian GP's finish line in third position - scoring an additional point by finishing eighth. The German, with his technical knowledge, has clearly contributed to the rapid progress the team has made this season.

"I thought that I could help, especially in the beginning. It was a benefit that I knew both BMW and Sauber, and I could help a bit," he says. "It definitely takes time. I hoped that improvements would come quicker actually, but it's just not that easy with so many new people coming on board, and everything needs to fit together. But more importantly, when we did get new parts, they worked."

While working on improvements, it is vital to not focus on one particular area but to succeed in developing new components for the whole car. "It's not only on the aero side alone that we are improving," reveals Nick. "We did some work on the suspension, while the engine is improving, and reliability as well.
