Very intense testing for BMW Sauber at Monaco P2

In the second free practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix, both Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld completed an impressive mileage while continuing their set-up work and tyre evaluations. In the first half of the session, Robert was the quickest man of the entire field.

The Pole completed a total of 48 laps in five stints. Over the course of the first half of the session he improved his personal fastest lap time several times. In the second half of the 90-minute practice session, however, Robert did without improving his personal fastest lap time of 1:16.848 minutes and consequently finished seventh.

Nick Heidfeld also made a huge contribution to the team's preparation programme. During his six stints the German completed a total of 43 laps. Unlike his team-mate, Nick never had a chance of matching the pace of the front runners. Throughout the session his car was suffering from intermittent fuel-pump problems. Therefore, Nick had to make do without setting a competitive lap time. Consequently, his lap time of 1:17.486 minutes and 14th place on the time sheets does not reflect the true competitiveness of car or driver.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap of the session, which was clocked at 1:15.940 minutes. The practice was red-flagged in the closing stages for four minutes due to an accident involving Spyker's Adrian Sutil, who hit the barriers at "Portier".

In the third free practice session, held on Saturday from 11:00 to 12:00hrs local time (10:00 to 11:00hrs BST), the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers will continue their preparations for the remainder of the weekend. At 14:00hrs local time (13:00hrs BST), the qualifying session will provide an indication of the BMW Sauber F1.07's true performance level in Monaco.
