In the qualifying for the Canadian GP, Nick Heidfeld secured a fantastic third grid position, ahead of both Ferraris. Robert couldn't quite match his team-mates pace but from eighth grid position, he also is in a promising position for scoring points.´ For both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, it wasn't any problem whatsoever to advance to the second knockout phase of qualifying. Nick made a mistake on his first flying lap but improved on his second and third laps to set a personal fastest lap time of 1:17.006 minutes and finish fifth. Robert set his personal fastest lap of 1:17.267 minutes on the second flying lap of his first four-lap stint. He went out for a second assault in the closing stages of the leg but failed to improve. Still, he finished 9th and also qualified for the next round of qualifying. The fastest lap time (1:16.468 minutes) was set by Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen.

Eliminated: Anthony Davidson, Ralf Schumacher, Heikki Kovalainen, Alexander Wurz, Adrian Sutil, Christijan Albers.

Both Nick and Robert succeeded in qualifying for the top-ten shootout and both completed two stints to do so. In his first stint, Robert set a 1:16.418-minute lap and in his second, he improved to 1:16.368 to finish eighth. In the meantime, Nick experienced an extremely thrilling second knockout phase. His first 1:16.590-minute lap was disallowed for having cut the final corner, hence, he went out in the very last possible seconds for a second assault. And what an assault it was. He set two fantastic split times and in the third section, he made slight contact with the wall of champions. But this didn't prevent him from crossing the line in 1:15.960 minutes to finish third. The fastest time (1:15.468 minutes) was set by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Eliminated: Takuma Sato, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Scott Speed.

In the top-ten shootout, Nick delivered in fantastic style. In his first assault, he already outqualified Ferrari's Felipe Massa but in his second, he did even better. The German crossed the line in 1:16.266 minutes to qualify third, behind the McLarens but ahead of both Ferraris. Robert, however, couldn't quite match the pace of his team-mate. The Pole also completed two stints but with his personal fastest lap time of 1:16.993 minutes, set in his second assault, he had to settle for eighth grid position. Pole position was secured by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Result: 1st Lewis Hamilton, 2nd Fernando Alonso, 3rd Nick Heidfeld, 4th Kimi Räikkönen, 5th Felipe Massa, 6th Mark Webber, 7th Nico Rosberg, 8th Robert Kubica, 9th Giancarlo Fisichella, 10th Jarno Trulli
