In the second free practice session for the US Grand Prix, held in extreme heat (environmental temperature 33° C, track temperature 57° C), the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers completed a total of 93 problem-free laps while continuing their preparations for the remainder of the weekend. In session two of the US Grand Prix weekend, the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers executed a massive preparation programme. Nick Heidfeld completed a total of five stints and 43 laps respectively, with Sebastian Vettel lapping the 'Indianapolis Motor Speedway 50 times, over the course of his five stints.

And while most of the other drivers opted for setting a fast lap time in the closing stages of the session, Nick and Sebastian opted for a completely different strategy. Nick set his personal fastest lap time of 1:13.026 minutes on a heavy load of fuel, on the first timed lap of his fourth stint - a twelve-lap long-run - and completed another twelve-lap long run afterwards.

Sebastian also focused on the setup work and the tyre evaluations without trying to secure a top position on the time sheets. Just as Nick, he set his fastest lap time (1:13.217 minutes) on a heavy load of fuel, on the second timed lap of his fifth stint - that turned out to be a 17-lap log run.

The more impressive that Nick finished fifth on the time sheets and Sebastian (eleventh) was just two tenth of a second slower. Due to this strategy, you will have to wait until tomorrow to find out more about the BMW Sauber F1.07's competitiveness at Indianapolis.

In the third free practice session (10.00 to 11.00hrs local time, 15.00 to 16.00hrs BST), Nick and Sebastian will complete their preparations for the qualifying session and the race.

The fastest time of the session (1:12.156 minutes) was set by McLaren's Fernando Alonso.
