In the second free practice session for the French Grand Prix, the BMW Sauber F1 Team focused on set-up work and tyre evaluations. At the end of the day, Robert Kubica finished 12th, while Nick Heidfeld had to settle for 19th place, after sitting out the session.

As was the case in the morning session, second free practice at Magny-Cours was held in relatively cool conditions (20° C). As is usual on the Friday of a GP weekend, the BMW Sauber F1 Team continued its preparations for qualifying and the race, including tyre tests and set-up work.

Robert proved to be the busier of the two BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers. The Pole completed seven stints totalling 42 laps and set a personal fastest lap time of 1:16.236 minutes. In the second half of the session he carried out an 11-lap long run and two shorter stints to gain more data for the tyre choice and the final set-up refinements. He finished twelfth.

Nick started the second session in the same rhythm as his team-mate: he drove his first stints simultaneously with Robert, while for his other three stints he went out just one or two minutes after the Pole. However, the German didn't go out again in the second half of the session, therefore he couldn't improve on his personal best time of 1:16.968 minutes and finished 19th.

The fastest lap time of the session was posted by Ferrari's Felipe Massa who crossed the 4.411-kilometre circuit's finish line in 1:15.453 minutes. In the third free practice session (11:00 to 12:00hrs CEST, 10:00 to 11:00hrs BST), the BMW Sauber F1 Team will complete its preparations for the remainder of the weekend.
