In qualifying for the French Grand Prix at the "Circuit de Nevers", the Polish Robert Kubica secured an impressive fourth position, while German Nick Heidfeld finished seventh. For Robert, this is the best grid position of his Formula One career to date.
For both Nick and Robert, advancing to the second knockout
phase of qualifying represented no problem whatsoever. Nick completed just one
four-lap stint, and his personal fastest lap time of 1:15.783 minutes was
sufficient to finish ninth. Robert completed two stints and clocked a personal
fastest lap time of 1:15.778 minutes to finish eighth. The fastest lap time of
1:14.805 minutes was set by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
Eliminated: Vitantonio Liuzzi, Alexander Wurz, Takuma Sato, Anthony Davidson,
Christijan Albers, Adrian Sutil.
In the second leg of qualifying, Robert caused a stir by setting a
1:15.066-minute lap in his first and only run. With this time he claimed fourth
place. Nick needed two efforts to qualify for the top-ten shootout. After his
second flyer, he crossed the line in 1:15.149 minutes to finish sixth. The
fastest lap time of the session (1:14.795 minutes) was again set by McLaren's
Lewis Hamilton.
Eliminated: Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello, Mark Webber,
Scott Speed, David Coulthard.
In the top-ten shootout, Robert secured fourth position on the grid with Nick
qualifying seventh. Both Robert and Nick completed two flying laps on fresh
sets of tyres and both set their personal fastest lap times on their second
runs. Robert crossed the line in 1:15.493 minutes while Nick was about half a
second slower, posting a personal fastest lap time of 1:15.900 minutes. The
pole-sitter for the French Grand Prix is Ferrari's Felipe Massa who secured
pole with a 1:15.034-minute lap.
Result: 1st Felipe Massa, 2nd Lewis Hamilton, 3rd Kimi Räikkönen, 4th Robert
Kubica, 5th Giancarlo Fisichella, 6th Heikki Kovalainen, 7th Nick Heidfeld, 8th
Jarno Trulli, 9th Nico Rosberg, 10th Fernando Alonso.
