Alonso’s pole on Saturday and his podium performance on the race on Sunday could be watched by fans in Spain thanks to the efforts made by Renault.
TVE, the Spanish public network reached and agreement with the FOA to get the rights for the 2003 season for 5 Million Euros after striking a previous advertisement agreement with the French manufacturer.
Renault, one of the leader in automobile sales in Spain, wanted to capitalize on the early positive signs of Alonso with the hope that his performances would increase interest for F1 in Spain.
The 2002 season was not broadcasted nationally, despite Pedro de la Rosa involvement in the struggling Jaguar Racing team, and could only be seen in Catalonia, thanks to regional TV3. The fans in the rest of Spain had to rely on satellite connections to the German station RTL in order to follow last year’s season.
This year TV3 is broadcasting live the races to Catalonia after paying close to 1 Million Euros and TVE for the total of Spain after the above-mentioned agreement.
The timing was without doubt perfect as Spanish fans were able to see Alonso’s magnificent race. The news made it into the front page of all major newspapers despite the big headlines of the War on Iraq.
