Monaco, Thursday Practice 2010

The Renault F1 team got underway today in Monaco for this years Grand Prix. As ususal for Monaco practice took part on a Thurday.

The local weather forecast was a bit pessimistic yesterday. The reports said that it would be an overcast, grey and chilly day, but in fact we’re enjoying beautiful sunshine. The weather in Monaco has always been difficult to predict and if you look ahead to the next few days we could get a real mixed bag and even some rain. But, as I write my blog, there’s not a cloud in the sky; the yachts are glistening in the sunshine and the beautiful people are topping up their tans!

It may be a Thursday, but in Monaco that’s when free practice takes place. So, at 10:00 local time, the peace was shattered by the shrill roar of V8 power as the cars took to the track for their first taste of Monaco 2010. While the drivers got down to set-up work, the motorhome crews in the paddock were busy putting the final touches to their structures, which will be packed full of VIPs this weekend. It’s by far the busiest race of the year on the marketing side and there’s nowhere better for our partners to soak up the unique atmosphere of Formula 1.

This morning, Robert has shown that he’s already in the zone by setting the third fastest time of the opening session, just behind Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. Robert is really up for this weekend and he’s already told us how much he loves street circuits. It places like this where the driver can really make the difference.

In the paddock, the main topic of conversation is still about tomorrow’s qualifying session and exactly what we can expect. Will there be surprises in Q1 with 24 cars on the track? It seems likely that some big names could get knocked out of qualy early on. Dealing with the traffic is going to be the key to a successful weekend – both in qualifying and the race.

But qualifying is still some way off because tomorrow is a day of rest (so to speak) for the F1 world. Not that it’s going to be a complete day off for the team, especially the drivers, who will have a few media duties to complete.
