Fernando Alonso signed for Renault as a test driver in 2002 by his manager Flavio Briatore. After a year as a test driver he was moved up to one of Renaults race drivers.
In Malaysia which was the second race of the year, Alonso became the youngest driver ever to sit on pole position! Alonso then went on to win his first ever race later that year when he became the youngest race winner in history! and even lapped Michael Schumacher in the same race to make it even more of a great day for himself.
Since then Alonso has went on to many more podiums and in the 2005 season he won 6 races which has put him in contention for the drivers championship (which he will be the youngest world champion) and put Renault in a good position for the constructors championship which will be Renaults first as a whole team, not just an engine provider.

Fernando Alonso has also made the Spanish people crazy for formula one. Attendances for the races have dramatically increased with the blue and yellow colours filling the grandstands for Renaults number one.
