Volkswagen new sponsor for Alonso?

Volkswagen, the biggest car manufacturer in Europe, announced yesterday the purchase of Lease Plan, the biggest European company of car leasing and renting. The purchase was annnounced yesterday for a totol sum of 2.000 million Euros. Lease Plan has a fleet of vehicles of 1.2 million cars. The deal, if aproved by the Anti-Trust Comittee of the European Union, will see Lease Plan to merge with Europcar, a subsidiary of Volkswagen that already controls 17% of the European rental car market.

Lease plan has been a personal sponsor of Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso since 1997, when the driver was on karts, and Alonso wears the name of the brand on the helmet. The sponsorship deal could be worth more than 2 million Euros nowadys and will pose a problem as Alonso drives currently for Renault, a competitor of Volkswagen.
