Alonso tops the times at Silverstone

Renault Driver Fernando Alonso topped the times on the first day of tests at Silverstone. The Spaniard completed 60 laps to the British track for a total of 308 kilometers and had a best time of 1.22.068. His teammate, Jarno Trulli, finished 3rd with a best time of 1.23.386 after 28 laps behind the McLaren Mercedes of Kimi Raikkonen who finished second with a best time of 1.22.122 after 46 laps.

The morning session was disrupted by rain while the track started to dry for the afternoon session.

"In spite of unfavourable conditions, we got a good amount of work done today. We learned as much as possible in the wet, both about the tyres and set-up, and our times looked pretty competitive. Both drivers are pleased with how the car is handling here." said Christian Silk, Chief Test Engineer.

Jarno and Fernando concentrated on set-up work in the wet conditions. They ran on dry tyres at the end of the day as part of an R&D programme.

Testing should continue at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday.
