Alonso on pole at home Grand Prix

Spanish driver Fernando Alonso set the pole today at the Magny Cours circuit. A great lap by Alonso on Ranult's home soil to set the pole ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. The first time this year Alonso sets the pole and the first since the Hungaroring when he won the race. Alonso set a best lap of 1.13.698 and topped Michael Schumacher who finished second with a best time of 1.13.971 and Coulthard with a lap of 1.13.987.

Jenson Button was fourth and Jarno Trulli set the fifth best lap with a time of 1.14.070, less than 0.4 seconds slower than his teammate.

Juan Pablo Mongtoya had a difficult third sector and finished 6th ahead of Takuma Sato and his teammate Marc Gené who finished 8th just marginally slower than his teammate.

Kimi Raikkonen and Rubens Barrichello finished 9th and 10th today well off the times of his teammates.
