Ferrari development driver Jules Bianchi was injured at the GP2 feature race on Saturday at the Hungaroring.

Bianchi spun his car at the start and was then hit head-on by Renault's reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung.

 

Both the drivers suffered a fractured vertebrae, after which they were airlifted to AEK hospital in Budapest, where Felipe Massa was admitted last year after he was hit in the helment by a loose spring from Rubens Barrichello's car.

 

Bianchi had signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari in December last year.

 

Ferrari confirmed that the injury will keep him out of action for quite long time.

 

The statement from Ferrari read, "(Bianchi) will not be back in the cockpit until he has fully completed his rehabilitation programme."

 

While Renault stated that, "No surgery is required and his (Tung's) period of recovery is not expected to be an extended one. A further medical examination is scheduled for two weeks' time to assess his recovery."

 

Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari team boss expressed his concern for Bianchi after the F1 GP yesterday, where the team finished strongly with second and fourth place.

 

He said, "Our thoughts are with our young driver, Jules Bianchi, who had a serious accident in GP2 race: he must be strong at a difficult time like this, but he can count on the knowledge that Ferrari is there to support him.”
