Ferrari is wanting a change in the illegal passing rules, in wake of Fernando Alonso's drive-through penalty imposed last week at the British GP.

Alonso, while trying to overtake Renault's Robert Kubica got squeezed at the corner turn, and with no option left, was forced to cut the chicane, that took him in front.

The Stewards deemed the move illegal later in the race, and Fernando was given a drive-through penalty, as Kubica was already out of the race, and there was no way Alonso could give him back the position.

Ferrari criticised the time thus taken by race director Charlie Whiting to answer the query about whether Alonso, who cut a corner, should hand back the position to Robert Kubica.

They also released the timing and conversation between Whiting, which showed that it took the FIA almost two minutes to respond, by which time giving the place back to Kubica would have been complicated.

"We will discuss an amendment to the regulations. If the race directors are not involved within 3-4 corners afterwards, the manoeuvre is considered to be correct," Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali said in an interview with La Stampa.

When mischievously asked whether the rules need changing after every race, Domenicali smiled: "It's a very complex sport.

There have been two instances of rule change already this season, with Michael Schumacher involved in overtaking Alonso in the final safety car lap, and Lewis Hamilton overtaking the Safety Car in Valencia.
