this will be cool.

I agree, why fight the future, embrace it. If F1 could pioneer the extreme performance side of the future auto industry it would give total creditability to the cutting edge of technology.
To see these cars at high speeds whooshing almost silently around courses would seem beyond our Star-Trek images.
The noise and emissions pollution would become a thing of the past.
Totally wild !
Just think, it would soothe (the complaining middle of the night neighbours), allow the children and mom's to sleep in peace. You could hear race comments right in the paddock.
Radio communications would be crisp and clean.
F1 could help quite our streets and by-ways without sacrificing performance.
It would rid the world of oil wars, pollution, economic dominance, and dependency.
I'm all for it.

FACT: Just over 90% of all visitors to a race say that the most impressive thing about it was the sound.

Right. So have a quite race. They'll fall asleep in their seats. They wont hear them coming at all. In fact, why bother going to the race? You can just watch it on TV with the volume off. You wont miss a thing.

My first memory of a live F1 race...........the noise!

Why not get 26 Cattle prods and shove them up the drivers' @#$%& before the race?

I really can't see the point of an electric race series. Where does the energy come from? A power plant, what does that burn? Gas, Oil or COal, really green isn't it.

The sound of an F1 engine is something you'll remember, not like the sound of 26 milk floats passing buy.

If electric car racing were EVER going to amount to anything, it already would have.

It hasn't.

It never will.

It's like having a last drunk standing contest where all the contestants drink water.

It will simply never work.

Hell, F1 as it is is on it's last legs. Their TV contracts are a fraction of what they used to be, attendance is falling off by 23% per year and sponsors have left the sport hand over fist. The only thing keeping the sport alive at this point are the manufacturers...of which there are only 2 left: Mercedes and Ferrari. Renault don't count. They have cut off all funding other than engines, and that isn't going to last much longer.

I said 2 years ago that I didn't see many staying in the sport blowing that kind of money. I said WAY back then that Toyota, BMW, and Honda wouldn't last the next 4 years. They didn't.

Pretty soon, Mercedes will hang it up. It's just simply not going to be worth the money. Ferrari will hang onto it for one reason only: It's the only thing they have left. They can't race anywhere else because they will lose badly...so this it is for them.

It's exactly what they hope for too. To simply outlast everyone else. They will. Mercedes will bow out in the next 3 years and that will leave only Ferrari. Everyone else will be an also ran. The sport will die.

All the big wig communist, prince, king people that spent the future of their entire nation on a track will wonder where all the money is. Where are all the big names? Where is Mercedes? Where is Honda? Toyota? Ford? Chevy? Chrysler?

Where did they all go? You promised us a world forum...now all we have are go-karts made by has beens racing top notch Ferrari's.

That's where it's going to end up. That's where it will all end. I give it 5 years tops.

Of course, everyone will say I'm an idiot. But I'm also the one that said Toyota and Honda will not make it another 2 years.

F1 has, at best, 5 years to live. It'll all go belly up right about then...because nobody will be left to pay the ridiculous money anymore.

It's the fans exuberance over their given sport that makes it a success, not the amount of noise it can generate.
That's like saying you enjoy the sound of a leaf blower or a cement breaker because it is loud.
Why not make jet plane engines noisier so your trip is more exciting.
Even silencers on guns make James Bond movies more intriguing.
Face it, change will come as it always does and the new generation fans of it will enjoy it as we've accepted going from the typewriter to the computer. Do you wish to crank a noisy old phone or push a silent button on your cell for a world of info at your figure tips.
Come on, join the future for all it offers. You sound like my grandmother and her complaints over nearly every new invention.
F1 will change sooner than later, make book on it.

You missed the last lap too. You thought you'd get to the outhouse to use the bathroom before they took the victory lap. You figured, "Hell...I'll hear 'em coming in plenty of time!"

You did't. You never heard a thing. You sat in a library and looked up once in a while and hoped there was something to actually look at.

Sessions if you think electric cars are green, then you are not as smart as I have given you credit for. The construction of 1 electric car pollutes the planet more than the construction of any traditional combustion powered one.

Do you realise how many laptop batteries go into a reasonable size/powered electric car? Somewhere in the region of 8000. That will only give you 200 miles on a full charge. What happens when they need to be replaced after 5 years maximum.

Nothing about electric cars is environmentally friendly.

The only way forward is hydrogen. Honda have proven this to be the case. Unfortunately the technology to store such vast amounts are still in their infancy.

Technology is great, when it isn't a hypocritical pile of crap, which electric cars are.

LOL, Yes Formula One Racing is about many sensory stimuli. The Sound, The Smell, The Speed, The Rivalry, The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat!

Electric Race Cars are good to apply to an oddity form of racing where you are permitted to see the entire race track, like in NASCAR or something like that. Without the sensory part of the sport we would just be bored. What the Electric Race Cars can do is have each Race Car have its own "Sound Track" to souond like they have a real engine (of which ever type they want) which would be played at a very regulated sound volume level and they can make all kinds of sounds too.

LOL, this idea of racing is just odd.

My knowledge of electric cars is very limited and I suppose one should bone up before thinking they are the end all. I’m sure most sources of extreme power have a down side to our environment. The opinion that was trying to be projected is I’m open to change which would include a quiet car if the racing was still as exciting like a soccer match or any other sport that offers entertainment for millions of people world wide.
I doubt followers of F1 would not adapt to know when to stand when the cars zoomed by with lesser or minimum sound. I assume TV screens and commentators would be in constant contact with the fans setting up an accelerating (no pun intended) atmosphere; same as in less noisy sports.
I’ll also make an attempt to live up to being as smart as you’ve previously have given me credit for. Hang in there, I’m trying…

since hydrogen is not a fuel but an energy carrier, you still have to extract it from water. this is done by electrolisys and most power plants rely on gass or coal to generate electricity, so we are back to square one as far as the energy origins are concerned.

ps as far as the coments on electric vs combustion engines, for me f1 is a sport first and spectacle second, so whatever system will give a car better performance should be used. sure i would miss the noise of old f1, but one cannot stop progress.

The more electric cars there are on the road, the more power that electric utility plants have to generate to keep them charged up. Unless that plant that you are getting your charge from is solar, hydro or geothermal, that's NOT a green car in my book!

Bring on Formula Atomic. That'll be powerful, interesting and an accident would wipe out the track.

We are not going to quit fossil fuels until every last bit of profit is sqeezed out of the damned thing, and then there'll be a war for the last of it, which would end up being used to fuel the tools of war and by the end of it, we'll all be dropping nuclear weapons and thats how we'll end up with guns and playing FALLOUT in REAL LIFE.....

Think about it, Frank. They already do. It's called RC racing. They run electric cars up to 1/8th scale on small tracks where you see it all. It's actually quite a large thing and a very popular hobby here in the States. Some folks win good money at it.

But on a full scale? Even at a place like Bristol, it just wouldn't work. Bristol (and Martinsville) are the Roman circus maximus of the racing world. You simply haven't see a race until you've seen one there. It's DEAFENINGLY loud. The cars hammer each other the entire time. 500 laps worth. In the end, you could build an entire car or two with all the parts knocked off onto the track.

It DOES get your blood pumping, and I'm not really that big a NASCAR fan at all.

Take the noise, smell and carnage away from it though, and you'd might as well sit at home and watch paint dry.

I see yr point mate but its horses for courses, F1 is completely different to those sports you list as its the fans of those sports who generate the noise, what is f1 without 20 odd cars roaring off the start line and making your ears bleed? A soft girls game thats what it is.

When the green flag drops here, the poll position car is only half a lap behind the last place car from the get go. The track is only 1/2 mile long. The average lap speed is 120 mph. Capacity is 160,000 people. It always sells out. ALWAYS. They race it during the day and at night. It is an experience. You walk in not a fan. You'll leave a true believer.

Thanks for taking my posts at face value. After reading hundreds of your comments at Ferrari we as readers are aware you can be rather, (lets call it blunt) at times, but IMO it’s your demeanour or style which offers up mostly entertainment. Another observation amidst your frankness is an overall attitude that seems to be open to change if it works and satisfies the end product.
That said, I too totally agree when the red lights go out and the roar erupts with the burning of tyre smoke it’s fantastic. I practically hold my breath through the entire first turn.
If the sound were to diminish it could alter things, but for sure at near 300 km the carnage would remain. True, the smells may change but different ones would surface.
Bottom line when high powered machines and talented drivers compete for all the marbles they will still serve-up a show.
Let’s not forget the additional all important input of money, technology, the media, and the likes of Bernie and of course Simon Cowell.

technology will be embraced and changes would come, but not so soon, not so overwhelmingly, it would creep in slowly, after many testings and failures, and finally one day we would have a clean energy running in f1. Which would that be? only time will tell.
