Formula 3000 racer Vitantonio Liuzzi has been the standout star of the season winning six out of the seven races so far. His accomplishments can be compared to Michael Schumacher's Formula One season so far and have now attracted the attention of Ferrari's bosses. It is rumoured that the 23-year old Italian has had recent talks with Ferrari boss Jean Todt about a Formula One future. Ferrari could persuade SAUBER to take him on board as a replacement for the departing Giancarlo Fisichella in an arrangement similar to the one currently enjoyed by Felipe Massa. Teams are keen to keep top drivers racing and such a deal could be preferred over a more traditional testing role with Ferrari. It would also provide Ferrari a chance to pit him against Felipe Massa in race conditions.

Liuzzi would also be an attractive prospect to SAUBER as he has substantial backing from Red Bull. The Austrian energy drinks company is on the fence over whether to continue supporting SAUBER or to put their resources into the Jaguar team instead next year. If SAUBER were to give Liuzzi a race seat it could pursuade Red Bull to extend their ten-year partnership with the team.

SAUBER have not yet mentioned the consideration of Liuzzi for next season but do not be surprised to hear more on this in the coming weeks.
