Peter Sauber Claims VW not Likely to Enter F1

The hot rumour for several years now is that VW/Audi will enter Formula One, possibly as an engine supplier to team SAUBER PETRONAS. Peter Sauber has now dismissed this rumour. "I don't think Volkswagen are in a situation to do that," Sauber told Autosport magazine. But the owner of the small Swiss team did not seem to drop any hints who he may partner with for 2006. "I have talked with manufacturers many times - those already in the sport and those who are not. Sooner or later Sauber may go with a manufacturer but I don't think at the moment there are any new ones to come in."

Sauber also seemed to think the age of manufacturer domination in the sport could be drawing to a close. "I think Ford is the first of many to leave. The car industry is not in a situation where it can spend a lot of money," he claimed.

So is this finally 'case closed' on the VW rumour? Or yet another case of a rumour being 'officially' denied shortly before it comes true?
