The buzz on the internet the past few weeks about SAUBER working on an engine deal with BMW finally appears to have some merit. A BMW spokesperson, speaking to Autosport magazine has said, "I can confirm that we have had an approach from SAUBER." Although BMW is involved in a long term contract with the Williams team through 2009, they have made it clear they are now ready to supply a second team starting in 2006. The spokesperson also confirmed interest from the Dietrich Mateschitz's Red Bull Racing team.

Although Peter Sauber has not ruled out continuing the relationship with Ferrari after their contract ends this year, he has made it clear that their asking price of around USD 30 million is too steep for the small Swiss team to afford. They are seeking a deal closer to the USD 10 million mark which appears to be where the offers from other manufacturers fall.

Although it is now certain that Sauber has entered talks with BMW, he has also stated that, "I have talked with manufacturers many times - those already in the sport and those who are not." It is still far from certain that a deal with the German manufacturer will be struck, yet a compelling case could be made that BMW would be an ideal partner for SAUBER. Technical Director Willy Rampf spent 15 years working for BMW before moving to SAUBER in 1994. He later left to work on BMW's victorious Dakar Rally program before returning to Hinwil in 2000. Certainly he still has current ties with his past employer. The proximity of Munich and Hinwil could also be advantageous for both parties.
