Silly Season Indeed!

The first bombshell of the IndyCar "silly season" has been dropped, &, boy, is it ever a big one! Target Chip Ganassi Racing has announced that Dan Wheldon will be eased out of the #10 car at season's end to make room for the 2007 IndyCar Series champion, Dario Franchitti. Don't feel too badly for Dan, however: he will drive the Panther Racing #4 car.
At the moment, the person to feel sorry for is Vitor Meira, who must now start exploring his options.
Franchitti, who left Andretti/Green Racing & the IndyCar Series behind after '07 to drive for Ganassi's NASCAR squad, was left without a ride about one month ago due to sponsorship issues. With that endevour having come to a premature end, Dario is excited by the prospect of returning to IndyCar.
For his part, Wheldon experssed his appreciation for the support that Ganassi has given him over the past three seasons, and his enthusiasm for returning to Panther. "This is the place where I started my career in 2002 and with the personnel and leadership that John Barnes has put together, I know that we'll be fighting for outright victories, the Indianapolis 500 title and the league championship. I'm looking forward to when my obligations with my current team have been honored, so I can get with the entire Panther family and start moving towards all of our goals of winning races and championships together. It's great to be back."
Panther Racing has stated their desire to hold on to Vitor Meira, contingent upon his finding sufficient sponsorship funding to adequately staff a second car.
