IndyCar - The Next Generation?

On display yesterday over at the media center of the IMS grounds was a 1/4 scale model of what apears to be the leading chassis candidate for the next generation of IndyCars, which the IRL hopes to have ready for use by 2012, if not 2011. The concept was designed by the Acura (a "luxury car" division of Honda) Design Studio, located in Pasadena, CA.

The proposed car reportedly meets all of the key points that the league has called for when they first asked for designs to be submitted, including:

1) increased driver protection

2) decreased risk of interlocking wheels with an opponent

3) The undertray creates more downforce than the current car, & the wings create less: this should help to facilitate more passing.

4) maxiumized space for sponsor logos

The model was seen by several of the drivers during their NYC media blitz earlier in the week, & reportedly got rave reviews. It has already been used in preliminary wind tunnel tests.

I will keep everyone posted as further developements warrent.

I'm not sure lack of sponsor space has been a problem recently, but that's okay. It's a car that will take some getting used to, but if the racing is better, I'm all for it.

I don't know gturner, it seems like there's an awful lot of flat surfaces to hold sponsors. Almost in script form like the ones that scroll after a movie posting the stars, director, or whatever. I know the won't scroll but it looks like quite a bit would fit in those areas, Plus you've got that black area behind the drivers helmet to use also. You know advertisers, will find a way to get their products displayed.
But, you're right if they perform well we can get used to the change even if it's somewhat shaped like an ultimate vacuum cleaner canister.

I am very concerned that the total dependence on ground effects will result in porpoising.

Its a nice design and also nice in that it will create, with some good marketing (nascar style, reach out!), interest from outside media, both here in the USA and in other countries, FREE PR if the car looks sexy.
They need to have some opportunies for builders/innovators to take a chassis and make it their own both looks and performance wise. (nothing tht could change safety/integrity), It really sucks to look at the month of May and know that every car in the field will look the same, the tub and fuel unit can be a unit all buy, they need to open it up so the owners can buld the body, or just make a car their own, doesn't need to sacrifice safety. Not in this day and age.

What a massive amount of dug heap this POS is! Was this designed for twelve year olds?! Seems like most things are these days.

A moving billboard, advertising scheme, nothing more and certainly not science.

Maybe people nowadays are just to young to understand what great open wheel racing was, open engineering, technology. What a great concept huh? Now we go from twinturbo 850HP engines to exasperated 600HP go carts. No technical evolution, only restraint. No competition between tire manufactures, car manftrs, nothing.

@#$%& this @#$%&!! Just another nail in the coffin...

Thanks again Tony G., you FUGGING IDIOT!!
