In the previous story on this site I told how, due to sponsorship funding issues, Andretti Autosport had given both Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan permission to seek rides elsewhere for 2011. Now I can report that Hunter-Reay will be back with AA through the next two seasons, while Kanaan and the team have formally parted ways.

Hunter-Reay, who had series sponsor IZOD helping him keep his ride throughout 2010, lost that backing at season's end, putting him back on 'the market'. Fortunately, it looks like someone - and exactly who that is will be revealed at an as-yet-to-be-determined future date - recognized the value in associating themselves with the 29 year-old American with two wins under his belt.

For Ryan, not having to go through the whole off-season trying to put funding togeather is a huge relief. "I couldn't be happier knowing my future is with Andretti Autosport. Starting the job in October, rather than in March, will be a luxury I've never had before. I look to become a title contender throughout the season." 

Hunter-Reay rejoins with Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick, both of whom are under contract with AA through next season. 

On the flip side of the coin is Tony Kanaan, the 2004 IndyCar Series champion and the last driver from AA's 'golden era' (TK, Wheldon, Franchitti and Herta) of the mid '00s. The 35 year-old Brazilian has been with AA (originally known as Andretti-Green Racing) since the squad moved over from CART in 2003, and has notched 14 wins, including at least one every year from 2003-2008.

In the press conference announcing his departure, TK had high praise for his now former squad. "I personally want to thank my guys for all their hard work over the years and for always believing in me. This is a team sport at the end of the day and I've considered it a pleasure to have you guys on my team." 

While Kanaan has revealed nothing about his future plans, it is widely believed that he is actively seeking to remain in the IndyCar Series. With the Penske and Ganassi squads not thought to be interested in growing in size, his most likely options are with teams such as Newman-Haas, KVRT or Luczo-Dragon.

There is no current word as to whether or not Andretti Autosport is actively trying to fill the seat left vacant by TK's departure.
